Using a home-made thermomechanical mini machine for quick cutting of foam or other soft materials, you can significantly simplify the process of making home-made products. This device is a bit like a jigsaw machine - but a nichrome wire is installed instead of the file.

First of all, it will be necessary to cut a piece of nichrome wire suitable for the length. It can be obtained from various heating elements. As for the length of the segment, it is determined not by eye, but by purely experimental means.

To do this, you need to build a simple stand from a wooden bar or board and a couple of screws. You will also need a power adapter (5V, 3A), which must be connected to the wire. Using a multimeter, we check the current strength at different lengths. The optimal length is about 20 cm, since the current in this case is 1.8 amperes.

The main stages of work

After we have decided on the suitable length of the nichrome wire, then we proceed to the manufacture of the base of the thermomechanical machine. To do this, you need a small rectangular board (from an inch board), two bars and small parts. Instead of a board, a piece of plywood or MDF is suitable.

First, we assemble the base, and then we make a vertical stand. To do this, we connect two workpieces at right angles using hot-melt adhesive and a steel corner. After that, we drill a hole in the end of the resulting L-shaped part and glue the nail.

At the base, we drill a through hole, and also make a small depression. To do this, you will need to use a pen drill. Then we pull the “string” itself. For details on how to make a thermomechanical mini machine for quick cutting of polystyrene at home, see the video on the website.
