Using this home-made tool that every craftsman can make for himself, it is convenient to choose a "landing nest" for knife shanks (kitchen or hunting) in solid wood handles.
The main stages of work
For the manufacture of this tool we will use a steel strip 3 mm thick and 4 cm wide. First, mark with a scriber, and then cut the workpiece with teeth at the end - on a band saw or using a jigsaw.
The result should be a tool with a handle (tail) and cutting teeth. We process the surface of the workpiece on a grinding machine. At the next stage, we proceed to sharpening the cutting teeth, using various types of metal files.
Please note that such a tool can be used not only for the manufacture of solid wood handles for knives, but also for some other work - for example, when inserting a lock into a door leaf.
When processing the teeth of files, it is important to ensure that their upper tips are at the same level. After sharpening, the workpiece must be hardened - for this, we heat the canvas red-hot and immerse it in oil. Then we drill two holes in the rear of the handle.
Tool handle manufacturing
The handle itself is made of wood - two halves are fastened together using screws and steel threaded bushings. Then we cut off the excess parts and give the handle the necessary shape on the grinding machine. If desired, you can cover the surface with varnish on wood or mineral oil.
