Making a long grip clamp

Factory G-shaped clamps, which can be bought in almost every building hypermarket, are compact, practical and easy to use. However, they have one significant drawback. With their help, it is impossible to fix the details that are far from the edge of the table or workbench - they simply do not reach them.

This problem can be easily solved if you make a longer grip ("build up" the clamping parts). And for this we will use profile pipes of square section 20x20 mm. Two steel plates will also be required to make the clamping jaws, small pieces of metal strips with holes (“ears”) and fasteners.

The main stages of work

From a square profile of 20x20 mm, using a grinder or on a band saw, it is necessary to cut six blanks of different lengths, which are then welded together into long fingers-grips. Drill holes at the edges.

“Ears” are screwed to one end, to which movable lips are then welded. The free ends are bolted directly to the clamp “body” with bolts and nuts (for this purpose, holes of a suitable diameter must be drilled in it beforehand).

At the final stage of the work, it is necessary to clean all the structural elements and paint them with spray paint. Such modified clamps can easily reach the places of gluing parts and workpieces that are far from the edge of the desktop.
